The Georgian Grizzlies Men’s Rugby team will kick off its 2015 season on Saturday when they travel to Kitchener to take on the Conestoga Condors.
The Grizzlies are looking to build on consecutive second-place Western Division finishes. Over the past couple of years, Georgian has combined to go 8-4 during the regular season while outscoring opponents by 45 points.
Heading up the Grizzlies returnees is forward Robin Calamatta, an OCAA All-Star and Player of the Week last year who has captained Georgian the past two seasons. Calamatta finished with 30 points on six tries last year and will head up a front-line that was second among Western Division teams in scoring with 183 points.
Robin’s brother Albert, along with Andrew Noble (an OCAA Player of the Week), Drew Currie and Matt Black return from 2014. While the high turnover positions this season may seem to be a rebuilding campaign, head coach John Daggett says he expects the team to compete for an OCAA medal. Had Georgian not been decimated by injuries late last season, they would likely be looking for a second straight provincial medal in 2015.
Daggett, who has been involved in rugby for over 30 years. is entering his fourth season as head coach and his seventh overall with the program. He is excited with the talent and potential of the team’s newcomers. Edwin Sarfo, a centre with the Aurora Barbarians, and Cullen Fawcett stand out as freshmen to watch.
With two games in seven days before a prolonged break, getting off to a quick start will be crucial for the young team. After Conestoga, Georgian plays host to Sheridan on Saturday, Sept. 19 in their home opener, where they will look to build on a 5-1 record at Barrie Community Sports Complex the past two years.
