Welland, ON – January 5th, 2013 – The Georgian Grizzlies men’s volleyball team travelled this past weekend to compete in the Niagara College Invitational Tournament in Welland, Ontario.
The eight team tournament featured some great play from all the teams but unfortunately for the Grizzlies they came up a bit short against some stiff competition.
Up first was the host Niagara Knights.
While the Grizzlies played them hard they eventually fell to the Knights 3-1 by scores of 25-23, 25-15, 27-29, and 25-15. The Knights would go on to win the tournament dropping only two sets throughout the two day event, with one to Georgian.
The Grizzlies then faced the number five team in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s men’s volleyball rankings in the Outaouis Griffons. Georgian battled them hard and after the dropping the first two sets showed there resilience staying alive with a third set win but it wasn’t enough as the Griffons won 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16).
Entering day two of competition the Grizzlies knew they had an uphill battle to make it out of the round robin play facing the 1-1 Sheridan Bruins. The Grizzlies were able to take the first set 25-16 but the Bruins were able to rally back to take three straight sets from Georgian (25-16, 25-20, 28-26) to eliminate them from the tournament.
The Grizzlies will begin their second half of OCAA regular season play this weekend when they host back to back games Saturday and Sunday against Loyalist (Sat. 3pm) and Boreal (Sun. 2pm) at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
