The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams opened up their 2014 OCAA season’s on Friday night when they hosted the George Brown Huskies at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
Georgian’s women’s team opened in style pulling out a three-nothing sweep over the Huskies to earn their first win of the season.
With set wins of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-15, the Grizzlies controlled play throughout the match in a game that never seemed in doubt.
First year newcomer Brittany Coughlin (North Bay) led the team with 13 points while third year middle Allison Marshall (Orillia) had a strong season debut with 11 points.
On the men’s side the Grizzlies rallied back from a 23-19 deficit to win a thrilling opening set 30-28. Georgian was flying high putting together a strong second set that they won 25-19.
While the Huskies were able to win set three 25-13, the Grizzlies regrouped and finished them off with a 25-12 fourth set win to take the match three to one.
Fourth year veteran Adam Bielby (Barrie) led the Grizzlies in scoring with 17 points including 13 kills.
It was also an impressive game for rookie Darien Haynes. The Barrie native had a 16 point effort including a game high 10 stuff blocks in his OCAA debut.
The Grizzlies roll right into their busy schedule as they will travel to face the Seneca Sting this Wednesday in North York and then head to North Bay to play the Canadore Panthers on Sunday afternoon.
The next Grizzlies home games are on Friday, Nov. 7 when they host the Durham Lords at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
