Kingston, ON – October 6th, 2013 – The Georgian Grizzlies men’s basketball team put together a strong finish at the 19th Annual St. Lawrence Vikings Men’s Basketball Tournament this past weekend in Kingston, Ontario.
The Grizzlies got out to a good start on day one, taking a tight game from the John Abbott College Islanders from Montreal by a 66-63 final score. Georgian’s Teq Zwarych led all scorers with 22 points but it wasn’t enough for Georgian.
Their second game on Saturday was against an OCAA opponent in the Mohawk Mountaineers, who showed early they could put points on the board. Scoring 31 points in the first quarter, Mohawk was out to an 8 point lead early and despite the Grizzlies matching them the rest of the way, the Mountaineers were able to take it 108-90. Justin Mitchell led Georgian in scoring with 19 points in the loss.
Even with two losses on day one it all came down to the Grizzlies match Sunday morning match against the Vanier College Cheetahs also from Montreal. Vanier who went 2-0 on Saturday, were looking to clear their path to the championship game, but Georgian had other ideas.
With the Cheetahs holding a 64-55 lead heading into the fourth quarter the Grizzlies went on the attack putting up 28 fourth quarter points. Trailing in the dying seconds of the game, Georgian’s Justin Mitchell hit a huge 3-point game tying shot with .5 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
In overtime the Grizzlies carried their momentum and were able to edge out Vanier 90-88. The win sent the Grizzlies into the tournament championship game in a rematch against the Mohawk Mountaineers.
In the finals, Mohawk proved they were the team of the tournament leading the final game start to finish in a 100-77 victory. Georgian had 14 point efforts from both Justin Mitchell and Teq Zwarych in the loss.
Third year guard, Justin Mitchell was named a tournament all-star for his strong efforts for the Grizzlies.
Georgian will continue their tune up for the OCAA Regular Season when they travel to take on the Redeemer Royals in an exhibition game Tuesday night. The Grizzlies open their OCAA Regular Season on Saturday, October 26th when they host the St. Lawrence – Kingston Vikings at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
