Grizzlies fall short in championship opener
March 06, 2015

The Georgian Grizzlies had a battle on their hands to open the 2015 Belairdirect OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship when they faced the Fanshawe Falcons in Oshawa.

After a tight first half in which the Grizzlies held a 36-35 lead, Georgian’s shooting went cold to open the third while Fanshawe’s took off with the Falcons pulling ahead to lead by 14 points to enter the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies dug deep and did everything they could do to get back in the game with an 11-0 run in the fourth to pull within two points (70-68) with just under five minutes to play.

With just 4.3 seconds remaining, the Grizzlies found themselves down three points with the ball in their hands but they were unable to hit a game-tying shot, falling to the Falcons 76-73.

CCAA All-Canadian Teq Zwarych (Whitby) had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds while teammate Justin Mitchell (Newmarket) was named Georgian’s player of the game, matching Zwarych with a team high 19 points. Also of note was the incredible play of third-year veteran Dylan McKenzie (Bracebridge) who had an over and above effort at both ends of the court.

The Grizzlies will now switch their focus to the bronze medal at the championship. Georgian will face the Lambton Lions at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the bronze quarter final match up.
