Grizzlies drop tight matchup against Trent

Barrie, ON – November 25th, 2012 – The Grizzlies women’s volleyball team gave all they had against the Trent Excalibur Sunday afternoon at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie but it they came up just short falling 3-2.

The anticipation for this match grew up until game time as both teams had been eyeing each other in the standings and both sides knew coming in that this was a big game.

The Excalibur got out to an early lead as the Grizzlies showed some nervousness early on, falling behind Trent and losing the first set 25-15.

That early nerves didn’t last long as the Grizzlies got their game going in the second set showing they have earned their spot near the top of the OCAA standings. Both teams battled back and forth but the Grizzlies came away with a 25-23 second set win.

The tight play continued right into the third set as both teams showed great determination in wanting to win the game. The Excalibur were able to make some good plays late and take a 2-1 advantage with a 25-23 set win.

During the break the Grizzlies dug deep and refused to be counted out, coming out on fire in the fourth set with their backs against the wall. Natalie Buck helped carry the team with some big kills to help the team put together an impressive 25-11 set win to take the match to a fifth and deciding set.

Unfortunately for the Grizzlies they ran out of steam falling behind the Excalibur 8-2 in the final set and despite a great effort came up short losing to Trent 15-7.

Natalie Buck had a big game for the Grizzlies posting 20 points including 16 kills while Erin McClean had a solid afternoon with 9 points along with 3 digs.

The win moves Trent into first place in the OCAA east division standings at 7-1 while the Grizzlies currently remain in a three-way tie for 2nd place.

The Grizzlies will play three games on the road Nov. 28th (Durham), Dec. 1 (Loyalist) and Dec. 5 (George Brown) before the holiday break.
