Grizzlies drop provincial opener
February 21, 2013

DSC_6837Peterborough, ON – February 21st, 2013 – It wasn’t the start the Georgian Grizzlies were hoping for as they opened the 2013 OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship Thursday afternoon at the event hosted by Trent University in Peterborough.

The Grizzlies had a slow start to their quarter final matchup against the Nipissing Lakers who held a 15-3 record on the season. Georgian fell behind early with a 15-6 deficit and couldn’t overcome the big Lakers lead, dropping the opening set 25-13.

Georgian started to turn their game around in the second set but the Lakers showed why they were the 2nd placed team in the west division this season giving the Grizzlies all they could handle.

Despite a valiant effort, the Grizzlies were no match for the Lakers this day dropping the next two sets 25-21 and 25-20 to lose in straight sets 3-0.

Natalie Buck was named player of the game for Georgian with 8 kills and 5 digs.

The Grizzlies still have a chance at a bronze medal and will now face the Durham Lords Friday afternoon at 1pm.

Earlier in the day during the awards breakfast Buck was named a first team east division all-star while teammate Allison Marshall was a second team all-star.

Meanwhile at the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship, Georgian’s Lyndon Sonego was named OCAA east division rookie of the year while Michael Vandinther was named a second team east division all-star.
