November 25, 2012

Barrie, ON – November 25th, 2012 – The Georgian Grizzlies men’s volleyball team has had a flare for the dramatic this season and Sunday afternoon was no different with a 3-2 win over the visiting Trent Excalibur in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) play at the Georgian Athletic Centre.

Coming off a big 3-1 win yesterday over Fleming, the Grizzlies looked strong taking the first set 25-20, but the Excalibur came right back to take the next set 25-21 to even things up.

Georgian fired right back in the third set posting a 25-18 to push them ahead 2-1.

The Grizzlies looked to have the fourth set in control with a late lead but full credit to Trent as they rattled off some difficult points to tie it up at 25 and then took the set on consecutive points in the tie break 27-25.

The fifth and deciding set was back and forth and came right down to the wire. Another tie break was needed as both teams wouldn’t quit, but it was the Grizzlies who came out with the 17-15 set win and the match.

Lyndon Sonego had another fantastic game with 24 points including 18 kills and 5 key serving aces. The freshman and Barrie native had a total of 45 points in 9 sets over two games this weekend including an impressive 35 kills to help lead the Grizzlies to back to back victories.

Jason Grimm and Andy Carriere were also strong for Georgian scoring 20 and 12 points respectively.

Despite the loss, Trent’s Chris Jackin was dominant for the Excalibur scoring 25 kills.

The Grizzlies will now play three games on the road Nov. 28th (Durham), Dec. 1 (Loyalist) and Dec. 5 (George Brown) before the holiday break.
