Ottawa, ON – November 10th, 2013 – The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s basketball teams travelled to Ottawa as they continued their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) road trip.
The Grizzlies men’s team were in tough against last year’s OCAA Bronze medalists the Algonquin Thunder on Saturday night.
Georgian held their own trailing by just three points heading into the fourth quarter, but the Thunder pulled ahead with some key baskets and were able to hold on for a 85-71 victory.
Justin Mitchell (Newmarket) led the Grizzlies with 23 points, while Georgian’s Teq Zwarych (Whitby) also had a solid game scoring 14.
The men’s team looked to turn things around in their second game in less than twenty-four hours when they faced the Coyotes de La Cité on Sunday.
They found themselves in another tight match all tied 41-41 at halftime. Not wanting to make the nearly six hour journey home without anything to show for it, the Grizzlies stepped up in the second half led by Justin Mitchell who had a team high 19 points in the half alone.
Teq Zwarych continued his strong play putting up 17 points and leading the team with 13 rebounds in an 88-83 Georgian victory. The win improved the Grizzlies record to 3-2 on the season.
The women’s Grizzlies team played their sole game of the weekend against the three time defending gold medalists from Algonquin on Saturday.
The Thunder showed exactly why they are defending champions giving Georgian fits all night leading to a 79-33 loss for the visiting Grizzlies.
Summer Bly (Barrie) led the Grizzlies with 13 points in over 36 minutes of playing time.
The Grizzlies men’s next home game is this Sunday, November 17th at the Georgian Athletic Centre as part of a triple header against the Canadore Panthers. The men’s and women’s volleyball teams will open the day with games at 1pm and 3pm before the men’s basketball team finishes off the day at 4:30pm.
