Grizzlies basketball split with Lancers
January 13, 2015

Meeting for their second and final time of the season the Georgian Grizzlies and Loyalist Lancers played two very competitive basketball games on Sunday afternoon at the Georgian Athletic Centre.

In the men’s contest both teams battled back and forth in a game that featured fifteen different lead changes where the last team to score was going to win.

Unfortunately for the hometown Grizzlies it was the Lancers who were able to pull out the 80-76 win.

Georgian had good efforts out of Jonathan Edwards (Mississauga) who had 17 points and Ivan Ivic (Barrie) who had 15 points. Teq Zwarych (Whitby) scored another double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds.

The Lancers were led by Jordan Marlowe (Richmond Hill) who scored 21 points including a pair of clutch three-pointers which put Loyalist ahead.

On the women’s side, after a slow start to the game the Grizzlies began to chip away at the Lancers leading.

After trailing by as many as 8 points going into halftime, the Grizzlies were a new team in the second half outscoring the Lancers 31-19.

With just over a minute to go Mackenzie Merkley (Guelph) drained back to back three pointers to push the Grizzlies ahead by one point as they held on from there for a 56-52 victory.

Merkley had 14 points in the game while teammate Hannah Pearsall (Guelph) had a game high 16 points.

Both teams will be back in action this Wednesday when they travel to face George Brown. The men’s team will play their next home game this coming Sunday, Jan. 18 when they host the Canadore Panthers at 1pm.
