The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s basketball teams had a big night on the road when they travelled to face the George Brown Huskies on Wednesday night.
After taking the lead late in the first quarter, the Grizzlies men’s team never looked back as they put together a solid 76-65 win over the Huskies.
Georgian had an incredible 30 points from free throws while shooting 90.9% from the line to get them back in the win column.
Justin Mitchell (Newmarket) led the way with a season high 23 point performance while Tequilan Zwarych (Whitby) continued his MVP-calibre season, registering his 11th double-double in twelve games this season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Grizzlies now sit in second place in the east division standings with a 9-3 record and are just one win back of the Durham Lords for top spot.
On the women’s side the Grizzlies had a slow start but rebounded starting in the second quarter leading to their second road win of the year by a 69-60 score.
It was another huge game for last week’s OCAA women’s basketball athlete of the week Mackenzie Merkley. The Guelph native had a season high 24 points, her fourth straight game with double digit point totals.
Shelby Clark (Barrie) was also impressive with a 16-point performance and teammate Hannah Pearsall (Guelph) had her first career triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in the Grizzlies’ second straight victory.
The two wins help put the Grizzlies back into the playoff picture as they now sit in a tie for sixth place in the east division.
The Grizzlies men’s team will return to action at home this Sunday when they host the Canadore Panthers at 1 p.m. Both teams will then be hitting the road to Ottawa the following weekend.
