Etobicoke, ON – The Grizzlies Badminton team kicked off their season this past weekend (Oct.12-13) at the Humber Cup in Etobicoke, ON at the Humber College Athletic Centre.
Competition was tight at the two-day event but the defending OCAA Champions Humber Hawks were able to hold serve on their home court.
Former two-time OCAA Men’s Badminton Champion Tim Chiu (Humber) and current defending two-time OCAA Women’s Badminton Champion Tracy Wong came away with the Men’s and Women’s singles titles.
The Humber Hawks made it a clean sweep also winning the Men’s Doubles (Tim Chiu & Andrew Lau), the Women’s Doubles (Renee Yip & Tracy Wong) and both co-winners in the mixed doubles (Renee Yip & Ra Seang, Tracy Wong & Simon Yip). The mixed doubles final was unable to be played due to a power outage.
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies had a fine showing at the event and will continue to build throughout the season.
Georgian’s Sean Irving made it to the semi-finals in the Men’s Singles before losing a tight contest to eventual winner Tim Chiu.
Irving also was strong in both doubles competitions making to the semi-finals along with teammate Trevor Neville on the men’s side and also making it to the semi-finals in the Mixed Doubles competition with teammate Rebecca Trischler.
Trischler and Maggie Tremblay placed 2nd in the B Flight of the Women’s Doubles while Brittany Clare finished 2nd in the Consolation Round of Women’s Singles to go along with finishing 2nd in the Mixed Doubles B Flight round with teammate Trevor Neville.
Next up for the Badminton Team is the Redeemer Invitational this weekend (Oct. 19-20) in Ancaster, ON. The Grizzlies will then play as hosts for the Georgian Open on October 28th-29th.
This season Georgian will also be the hosts to the 2013 CCAA Badminton National Championship which will run from February 28th through March 2nd, 2013.
