Georgian’s David Wesley accepts CCAA Badminton Coach of the Years Honours

Barrie, ON – February 27th, 2013 – It was a special night for Georgian Grizzlies Badminton Head Coach David Wesley who was named CCAA Coach of the Year at the 2013 CCAA Championship Awards Banquet held Wednesday night at Georgian College.

The award was especially special for Wesley who received his CCAA Coach of the Year ring right where he spends countless hours working with his athletes at Georgian College.

CCAA Players of the Year and Coach of the Year recipients receive a customized ring provided by Jostens, the official ring supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.

Under Wesley’s leadership, the Grizzlies captured gold in men’s singles and men and women’s doubles at the east regionals this year. They’ll compete in four events as the host team of the 2013 CCAA Badminton National Championships.

“Wesley’s team improved their depth and had strong results this year,” says Alf McGuire, CCAA badminton convenor. “He’s a great guy and an excellent ambassador for the sport.”

Wesley strives to develop each teammate into a multidisciplinary athlete armed with a positive attitude and strong academic skills.

He’s a local sports leader, organizing badminton clinics, coaching for the Ontario Winter Games and introducing the sport to the local Special Olympics chapter.

A typically modest Wesley addressed the banquet crowd Wednesday after receiving the honour.

“I don’t think I am deserving of this honour,” said Wesley. “This certainly wouldn’t happen without a great assistant coach I have in Cindy Browning and a great group of athletes I’ve been privileged to work with.”

Other nominees for 2013 CCAA Badminton Coach of the Year were Richard Bennicke of the DAL-AC Rams, Shannon Lim of the NAIT Ooks, and Janice Walker of the VIU Mariners.

The official opening ceremonies for the 2013 CCAA Badminton National Championship gets underway Thursday morning at 10am at the Georgian Athletic Centre with round one play beginning at 11am.
