Georgian College’s reining two-time Male Athlete of the Year Colton Kalkanis is set to make the next step in his golf career this week as he competes at the PGA TOUR Canada qualifying school event in Kissimmee, Fla.
The four-round tournament takes place at the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Reunion Resort and Club, just outside Orlando. A field of 132 golfers will compete April 13 through 18 with the top 18 players earning exempt status and players finishing 19th through 40th plus ties earning conditional status on the PGA TOUR Canada for 2014.
The PGA TOUR Canada will hold 12 events in this year’s schedule from May to September all across the country. The top players on the tour will earn Web.com Tour status which is the top feeder system for the PGA Tour.
Kalkanis became the first male golfer to repeat as the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Champion this past fall, an event he won by an incredible 10 strokes, setting the all-time record for lowest score in the tournaments history. He was a medalist for the second time at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Golf Championship in October, earning a silver medal to go with the gold medal he won in 2012.
The Barrie native is a two-time CCAA All Canadian and added the title of SIRC CCAA All Canadian Academic Award for his achievements not only on the golf course but in the classroom in Georgian’s Golf Facilities Operations Management program.
