Another pair of victories for Georgian Volleyball

Barrie, ON – November 17th, 2013 – The Georgian College Athletic Centre was a busy place Sunday afternoon as the Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams hosted the visiting Canadore Panthers from North Bay.

The women’s volleyball team looked to extend their winning streak to four games and did just that against a tough Panthers team.

The Grizzlies controlled the game from start to finish with set wins of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-17.

Erin McClean of Barrie continued her strong play for Georgian. The fifth year veteran had 9 kills in the contest to lead the team. Midland’s Hannah Campbell had 6 serving aces and 3 stuff blocks in the contest.

Georgian have been red hot lately as they have dropped just one set in their last ten and sit in 2nd place in the east division standings with a 5-1 record.

The men’s team continues to turn out entertaining performances as they continually show their resilience.

The competition was tight against Canadore as the first set went to an incredible score of 33-31 with the Panthers able to pull out to an early 1-0 lead.

The Grizzlies turned things around taking the next two sets 25-17 and 25-14 to capture the lead, but the Panthers wouldn’t give in taking the fourth set 25-20 to send the match to a fifth set tiebreaker.

In final set, the Grizzlies were able to pull out a 15-9 set win to take the match 3-2.

Lyndon Sonego of Barrie had another terrific match posting 24 kills and 9 digs in the victory for Georgian. Rookie Matt Kerr of Wingham also had a solid match with 14 kills as he helped the Grizzlies win their fourth straight match.

Georgian now holds a 4-2 record on the season and they continue to climb the standings as they now sit in fifth place in the tight OCAA east division.

Both the Grizzlies men’s and women’s teams will next travel to face the George Brown Huskies next Friday night before playing their next home game on Friday, November 29th against the Durham Lords at 6pm & 8pm at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
