Team-building exercises

Kempenfelt’s low-impact team-building course takes about an hour and a half to complete and is open May 1 to Oct. 31, weather permitting.

Each activity encourages participation, co-operation and fun, and is designed to enhance individual awareness of group dynamics, decision-making, communication, leadership and fellowship skills. Team leaders must undergo a 45-minute orientation prior to leading teams through the course. Orientation times and course access must be booked through a conference co-ordinator.

NOTE: There is no alternative indoor activity for team members who choose to sit out on the team-building exercises. Insect repellent may be required in early spring/summer. If you forget to bring your own, there is some available at the front desk.

See the dropdown menu below for samples of our team-building exercises.

Build the bridge

Ancient bridge supports (concrete blocks) are anchored to the bottom of a pool of molten lava. To escape the tribe of cannibals chasing you, follow all the supports and move each member of the team to safety using only the wood beams provided. You may stand on the supports only if the wood beam is connected. Get everyone across before dinner, or you may be dinner!

Blind man's swamp

All team members stand closely together, one behind the other on one leg of the wood beam bridge and grab a hold of the balancing pole with one hand. You cannot change hands or let go, but you may slide your hand along the pole. The first and the last person, however, must hold onto the very ends of the balancing pole. Everyone must communicate their movements. If anyone “plunges” into the swamp, the whole team must start over. Oh, by the way, did we mention you’re wearing a blindfold?

Cross-country limbo skiing

Who says skiing is an individual sport? Here we lay three skis on the ground, side by side. There is a pattern to identify – ski one, ski two and ski three. The first team member puts their feet on the straps of ski one and ski two. The second member puts their feet on the straps of ski two and ski three, and so on. Now, as a group of trained professionals, cross the finish line in record time – since this is limbo skiing, don’t forget to duck!

Floating raft rescue

A scenic cruise down the Amazon has turned into a nightmare when your ship capsizes. You each have your own raft (patio stones), which are set up as evenly as possible on opposite sides of the river facing one empty raft in the middle. To better position yourselves for rescue, you must switch sides and end up facing away from the empty raft. No two people can move at the same time. You can only move in the direction you are facing. No two people can be on the same raft at the same time unless you are moving around another person and you can only move around a person if they are facing you. This exercise requires a maximum 10 participants per team.

Lumberjack stack

You’re the world champion of trick log rolling and you’re defending your title. Your team is standing side-by-side (arms locked) on the ground in front of the log. You must mount the log together as a team. Once this is accomplished, you can unlock your arms. Then, before you get to the rapids, each of you must switch sides, one at a time while remaining on the log. For example, the first person on the far right must switch positions with the first person on the far left, and so on. After the switch, you must dismount the log together as a team, arms locked. If one of you falls off the log, the whole team must start over. But hurry – you’re approaching the rapids!

Sinking island

This task requires the team to rescue survivors shipwrecked on a tropical island (patio stone) without touching the shark-infested waters surrounding the stone. To complete the rescue, each team must hold their position on the island for a count of 10 steamboats.

Spider web matrix

The tangled webs we weave inhibit us from moving forward. Here, each member of the team must move through the web matrix. Too much movement of the rope may awaken the giant mechanical black widow spider and that means each team member must try again! You can’t go under or over the web and you can only use each hole once.

Improve your group dynamics with our team building course

Course rates for set-up and preparation

  • one team: $50
  • two to three teams: $75
  • four to five teams: $100
  • six teams: $125
  • seven teams: $175
  • seven teams or more (max. of 14): $225
