Getting involved with Georgian College Students’ Association (GCSA) is easy. Each campus has opportunities for you to represent your fellow students and get more out of your college/university experience. All it takes is you, anything is possible!

Make sure to stop by the GCSA office and ask about the many ways to become part of something great.

The Georgian College  Students’ Association (GCSA) has numerous opportunities for students to get involved. You can run to be a part of GCSA (elections in September and January). Get more information about GCSA and how to pick up your election package.

Attend GCSA events – we have loads of them! Our monthly events are posted under the events tab. If you want more information on an event, come see us or give us a call.

If you want to help run one of our events, but aren’t ready to be an executive member, you can become a GCSA director, a promotional  or event team member or a transition leader. Click on the tabs to find out what exactly they do, and how you can become one.

GCSA director

Eight available positions
Term of office: 12 months
Office hours: Minimum of five hours/week (summer/co-op – 8 hours/month)
Reports to:  VP Administration or designated GCSA executive
Honorarium per semester: Up to $1,000/semester or $500 summer

Reporting to the GCSA directors:

  • GCSA reps

Eligibility

  • All candidates must be full activity fee-paying students of Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology
  • Students carrying full-time course loads must maintain a minimum semester weighted average of no less than 60% per academic semester
  • A part-time course load is defined as less than four courses and a minimum of one credit course per academic semester
  • A part-time student must have no failures – by accepting this nomination package, you authorize the Georgian College  Students’ Association to have your records inspected by the Registrar’s Office
  • In order to run for election, you must obtain a signature from the current GCSA president or Student Life manager
  • Candidates must make arrangements to meet with the GCSA VP of administration and GCSA president
  • Candidates must be in good standing with the college

General portfolio responsibilities

  • Directors are required to be a part of a specific portfolio appointed by the VP administration (possibly for another executive) which may include but is not limited to:
  • Attend all scheduled GCSA board meetings
  • Vote on college issues that are not deemed executive mandated
  • Complete an honorarium review on a monthly basis
  • Provide direction to the executive council on issues that will be voted on at the SEC business meetings
  • Assist with GCSA events and activities (concerts, pub nights, awareness weeks, etc.)
  • Recruit GCSA representatives by program area, generally one person per year from each program offered by Georgian College in Barrie
  • Keep GCSA reps informed on the activities and opportunities GCSA provides for students
  • Hold and chair regular meetings of GCSA representatives, generally one meeting per month during each academic semester
  • Assist with GCSA elections and by-elections
  • Assist with Food Locker program
  • Assist with marketing strategies for GCSA events and activities
  • Aid in reviewing GCSA policies and procedures (constitution, by-laws, etc.)
  • May sit on committees and event-planning teams
  • Assist with fundraising initiatives of GCSA

There are many opportunities to get a job on campus. If you’re good with computers, you can work in the library or Printing Services. If you’re social and like to talk to people, you could serve in the TLC or work in the Athletic and Fitness Centre. If you know a lot about Georgian College, you may want to give campus tours for prospective students. If you like to help people out with school, you can work in Peer Services.

There are many ways to become involved with the Orientation and Transition Team.

Start out as one of our SWAT (Student Welcoming and Activities Team) volunteers, and under the guidance of our transition leaders, you will help out with our big events like Get Connected, Orientation Day, Tug of War, Stress Free Day and many more.

You can then progress to a paid position as a transition leader and further develop your leadership skills and campus involvement. For more information please contact us.

To become a GCSA executive member

Elections begin in January for the following year. Pick up your election package from the GCSA office or Printing Services. Please complete the package and submit it by the due date.

To attend a GCSA event

Tickets for GCSA events are available in Printing Services, but most events are FREE! Just show up at the right place at the right time! GCSA events are posted under the GCSA events page.

GCSA director’s represent their programs to the GCSA executive. There is one director per program from all programs at the Georgian College Orillia Campus.

To become a GCSA director, pick up an election package at the GCSA office or Printing Services. Elections begin in September, with voting at the beginning of October.

Director duties:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Orillia campus GCSA executive and the student population
  • Attend monthly GCSA director meetings
  • Touch base each week with the VP Internal to obtain updates
  • Show your school spirit, promote GCSA events, activities and initiatives and maintain strong communication with classmates

As an incentive for their time, directors shall:

  • Receive a director shirt to wear around school and at GCSA events
  • Receive an invitation to attend the annual year-end awards night – Dine & Bash
  • Be given front-of-the-line passes to all GCSA events
  • Be included in pre-sale of tickets to all GCSA events
  • Receive free cover to all GCSA-hosted pub nights
  • Receive a reference letter at the end of their term
  • Receive an honorarium of $50 per semester for completing above duties

The Promo Crew is GCSA’s volunteer promotional team. Promo team members assist in promoting all GCSA events activities and initiatives, receive free cover into all GCSA-run pubs, an invitation to the annual year-end award night – Dine & Bash, are given front-of-the-line passes to all GCSA events, and get a reference letter at the end of the year.

The Student Welcoming and Activities Team (SWAT) are students who want to make sure new students and potential students at Georgian College feel welcomed.  SWAT members are needed for Orientation, Preview and Open House.

O-Leaders (Orientation day leaders are seasoned SWAT members. They generally know a lot about the school and student life and have been a SWAT member for at least one year. O-Leaders help with the organization of Orientation day, as well as Preview and Open House.

Why should you become a SWAT/O-Leader?

  • Enhance your communication, organizational and leadership skills
  • Make new friends and interact with incoming students
  • Work in a team and leadership position
