Acklands-Grainger is Canada’s largest distributor of industrial, safety and fastener products, backed by more than 120 years of proven history in providing selection, quality and service excellence to its customers. A key focus of Acklands Grainger has been to develop key working partnerships with many of the higher education Institutions across Canada. Acklands-Grainger is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment, promoting strong communities and finding ways to reduce its environmental footprint while providing products that help customers reduce their impact on the environment.

Anna Sedore, a student in the Research Analyst post-graduate certificate program, recently completed her internship at the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre (HBEC).

Anna Sedore, centre, is a Research Analyst post-graduate Certificate program student who worked on community based research projects at the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre. Joining her are Gary Boydell and Barb Watts, left; and Pat Roberts and Dan Phillips, right.

Anna enjoyed working on two community based research projects proposed to support the entrepreneurs of our seven communities and help Georgian find its niche within the entrepreneurship support network.

She was actively involved in writing research proposals and reports, structuring and conducting interviews and presentations for data collection, analyzing and organizing qualitative data, and using the data to construct databases in Microsoft programming.

During the process of data collection she had the opportunity to learn the ways in which residents, government, industry, and academic institutions work collaboratively to support the prosperity of a community. She also had the benefit of networking and connecting with key economic stakeholders throughout the college’s seven communities, including mayors and economic development offices as well as entrepreneurial and business support services.

“I am impressed with the calibre of information and research Anna was able to provide for the HBEC. As a matter of fact, we have extended an opportunity for Anna to continue working for us in the winter. The HBEC wants to support our students in many ways. Anna is one example of our commitment and success story,” says Marie-Noelle Bonicalzi, entrepreneurial advisor, Presidents Office.

“While there are many success stories in the 20-year history of the program, it’s great to see new and exciting opportunities open up for students, especially locally,” says Pat Roberts, career consultant, Centre for Co-operative Education, Internship and Career Services.

Georgian College graduate Dale George was named winner of a 2012 Colleges Ontario Premier’s Award in the technology category on Nov. 26. George accepted the award at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, where 115 other nominees, 800 guests and Premier Dalton McGuinty attended a gala event to honour the many successful college alumni.

MaryLynn West-Moynes, Georgian’s President and CEO, congratulates Georgian graduate and Premier’s Award winner Dale George. The awards celebrate the outstanding contributions college graduates make to Ontario and throughout the world.

“This award is a high level of recognition among my peers. It’s recognition that I’ve worked hard and it’s a real honour to be among all the talented nominees,” says George.

Each of Ontario’s 24 public colleges submits a nominee for six categories: business, creative arts and design, community services, health sciences, recent graduate and technology. Only six awards are granted annually, one per category, to celebrate the outstanding contributions college graduates make to Ontario and throughout the world.

“The last two days have been a whirlwind. To win a prestigious award and then come back to my college and see the amazing transformation it has undergone is overwhelming,” says George, who visited Georgian’s Barrie Campus for the first time in more than 20 years and currently resides in Manitoba.

George has established a niche in the world of design for improving operations, defining innovation and creating industry standards for a number of products and services.

Georgian’s President MaryLynn West-Moynes says that Dale is an example to uphold. “In our technology programs there are numerous students who have entrepreneurial related skills. They have to develop their passion and attitude, and Dale exemplifies this. He applied innovation and passion, and as a result he created jobs.”

George is currently on the leading edge as the Chief Technology Officer of Buoyant Aircraft Systems International. His remarkable journey began in the Industrial Design program at Georgian College. Throughout his evolution from the early days of designing the now-famous little yellow plastic slide that can be found in backyards across North America, to developing the first high-altitude wind turbine, to his aviation work with lighter‐than‐air airships with NASA and transport to remote areas, George has remained a trailblazer in his field.

“My time at Georgian made me want to live and breathe design. I wanted to make new products that would make a difference,” says George. It appears he has.
