Here at CARI, we connect industry and community partners with faculty and student researchers to help clear business and/or technology hurdles and better understand their target markets.

How we can help faculty
Applied research allows you to bring your expertise to industry, and to bring industry experiences to your students.
As a faculty researcher, you will supervise and mentor students to ensure high quality results that meet the needs of industry partners. Research projects provide faculty with excellent opportunities for professional development, networking and academic engagement.

Put your education to work
Applied research projects provide you with opportunities to put your education to work! Student researchers work with industry and community partners on real-world projects, ranging from product design and testing, to business support, to market research and more. Working under the mentorship of an experienced faculty member, you will have the opportunity to drive development and innovation.
Students from any program can get involved through applied research projects, co-op placements and internships. Many applied research projects are recognized as “capstone” projects. This type of work experience provides a meaningful way for you to connect with potential employers.

Annual Research, Innovation and Scholarship Day
Date: April 11, 2017
Location: Barrie Campus
The second annual event is held in the afternoon/evening and is open to all academic and administrative areas and will include:
- A keynote speaker
- Poster presentation and oral presentation opportunities for students, faculty and staff
- A book tent
- An innovation showcase
The event is a great way for students to showcase their capstone/class projects and for faculty and staff to present their innovative/scholarly work to the community. Please consider how you, your students and your colleagues might participate.

Entrepreneurship Learning Channel: Disruptive Innovation
New technologies are continuously changing how we work, live and play. New business models are emerging as established ones are being disrupted. Many of these innovations are fundamentally changing businesses, schools and communities, and are coming at an ever increasing pace. This inspirational workshop will touch on many of the key change drivers, and highlight how creative thinking is helping organizations harness disruptive innovations with the goal of growing their businesses or addressing difficult “grand challenges” within communities.
Environmental Technology Tech Report Poster Session
Students had the opportunity to share their research findings at the Environmental Technology Tech Report Poster Session.
Posters were set up conference style. There were a great range of research topics this semester. Here are some of the highlights:
- Alkalinity in snow pack and impacts on Lake Simcoe
- Invasive mussel impacts on Lake Simcoe
- Effects of road salt on steel water mains
- Assessment of peak discharge of stormwater and Lake Ontario nutrient loading
- Distribution of microplastics along shorelines in Barrie and Keswick
- Assessment of bee health in Simcoe County
Georgian Research Analyst Students win top honours at national conference
Students from Georgian’s Research Analyst graduate certificate program recently received top honours in competitions held by the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association (MRIA), a Canadian not-for-profit association representing all aspects of the market intelligence and survey research industry.
At the MRIA’s national conference in Montreal this June:
- Khyati Parmar was announced as the winner of the Jack F. Graydon award (of $1,000) for the best essay on marketing research by a student enrolled in one of the MRIA’s accredited programs (including Georgian, Algonquin College, Humber College and University of Georgia)
- The team of Khyati Parmar, Biya Sha, and Kimi Arora also were awarded second place in a student case competition involving 39 students from nine colleges and universities across Canada (winning $2,000); honourable mentions also went to the team of Lucas Beal, Nikita Satoskar, and Amanda Allnut, who did a great job representing the program at this event as well
Please join us in congratulating our students on their achievements! The Research Analyst program is one of Canada’s longest-running programs, dedicated to preparing students for careers in applied research. It has a great reputation among employers and more than 600 alumni working in all parts of the research industry from business to government and the non-profit sectors.
College and Ford celebrate charging stations and renewal of electric vehicle leases
Representatives from Ford Motor Company of Canada and Barrie Ford gathered at the Barrie campus June 29 to celebrate collaboration with the college and the two-year lease renewal of two electric vehicles (EVs).

Georgian’s inaugural Research, Innovation and Scholarship Day offered great networking opportunities for students, staff and Georgian partners who want to showcase their scholarly activities and share their research projects, papers, posters and innovations with a broader audience.

“Applied research” is a term used when existing technologies, processes and/or knowledge are used to create practical solutions to real-world problems. Projects can be at any stage of the research and development continuum, from early concept development through to final testing and validation. CARI works with industry and community partners to better understand the problem that they are trying to solve, to define the scope of the work required to provide a solution, and to conduct the project.

CARI also works closely with Georgian’s academic areas to ensure projects have the right expertise, including faculty and student researchers. Additionally, CARI helps partners identify options for external funding and to prepare funding proposals.
There are multiple funding opportunities available for applied research projects, depending on the industry, topic, size of industry/community partner, location of the business/community partner, etc. Contact us to discuss funding opportunities in more detail.
Some research activities require ethics approval, particularly when participants are recruited from Georgian College and the University Partnership Centre at Georgian College. The college’s Research Ethics Board (REB) is responsible for reviewing proposals and granting ethics approval.

In general, it takes three to eight weeks to fully develop a project and a proposal for funding. Projects can start once the funding agency approves the proposal.
In any applied research collaboration, our industry partner retains IP rights, unless another arrangement is agreed upon in advance.
The cost depends on resources required to conduct the applied research project. This includes student and faculty researcher time, as well as equipment and other relevant resources. Each project is unique and the cost of a project is determined on a case-by-case basis.
