Biography

With over 23 years of architectural and interior design expertise, Michael is a licensed architect with the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA). This is complemented by a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Toronto, a diploma in architectural design technology, and a post-graduate certificate in facility planning.

Michael accepted a position at Urbana Architects/HOK Canada, working as an intern architect for several large residential and hotel-winning competition entries located in the Middle East and Toronto. Michael has progressively gained insight and knowledge in low-rise passive house residential and commercial work experience. He is currently the principal at mEsh28 Architects, specializing in energy-efficient residential and restaurant interiors, with a focus on net-zero and passive house research.

As a professor within the Architectural Technician, Architectural Technology, Interior Decorating, and Honours Bachelor of Interior Design programs, Michael has implemented curriculum development, content and learning outcomes at both the degree and diploma level. He has also incorporated collaborative learning and online technology by emphasizing group assignments with peer evaluation and professional critique, and promoting student interaction through new design applications and online presentation software.

Teaching allows me to engage with students in creative ways that integrate research methods and studio practice, and challenge the industry standards. I enjoy lecturing and provoking the student’s ability to think beyond the shell of a building, responding to the greater context of the site and city, both culturally and sustainably. This investigation and experimentation, balanced by pragmatic forces that govern the design, lead to a meaningful response and design innovation.
